Hopefully, you’ll never be in a situation where your life is on the line. If that situation ever happens though, seconds will matter and could make the difference between life and death. Your knife may be your last line of defense, so getting that blade deployed quickly and easily is important. Automatic knives are designed with this purpose in mind, to be quick and reliable when it counts.
Automatic Operation
Automatic knives differ from other knives in that they open with the push of a button or lever which operates the opening mechanism. Other knives require the user to apply pressure to the blade in some way to open them. This is true for spring assisted knives also, because you must push a thumb stud to get the opening operation started.
Two Main Types
Automatic blades come in two main varieties. The first has an operation that works much like a regular folding knife where the blade rests in the handle when closed. The blade then pivots automatically around a hinge when a button is pressed. Out the front or OTF knives have a blade that deploys out of the end of the handle when opened.
History
Chances are you’ve heard of these knives before by another name, switchblades. They were popular for many years with questionable characters on the street and on the big screen too. For that reason, it’s easy to picture a switchblade, along with the telltale sound is makes when the blade is deployed. Their deadly reputation was well-earned however, and over time, laws have been created to limit their ownership.
Regulations
Generally, this category of knife is restricted to military, law enforcement, and EMS personnel. This is due to their speed of operation which makes them more dangerous than other knives. Regulations might also exist concerning shipping them across state lines, so it’s a good idea to check your local laws.
